BAHS is proud to announce the launch of its mentoring scheme for postgraduate research (PGR) and early career research (ECR) members. Details of the scheme are attached below, as are the code of practice, application form and supervisory support form.
Successful PGR and ECR applicants will be paired with senior members of the Association who have made themselves available for the programme. The Association recommends that the mentoring relationship be flexible and concentrate on the issues which are most pressing for the mentee. Some of the possible focus areas are:
• life and work balance
• the mentor’s experience with teaching and administrative work
• overcoming possible writing blocks and other obstacles
• thinking strategically about one’s career in- or outside academia
• the mentor’s experience with publishing at the right time and at the right place
• securing a book contract
• identifying postdoctoral schemes and job offers
• networking opportunities
Mentoring relationships will be established for one year in the first instance with the possibility of extension. Because mentors are not to comment on the content of written work, or to interfere with existing supervisory arrangements, mentors will be paired with applicants who are not in their primary field of study.
Applicants who wish to partake in the programme for the year 2020-2021 should read the code of practice and scheme information carefully before filling in their application. Applicants must be based in the UK and be members of the organisation. If you wish to join before you apply then please email Joanne Pettitt at firstname.lastname@example.org
Both the student application and the supervisory support forms should be submitted no later than July 19th 2020. Please submit all documents to Joanne Pettitt (email@example.com) and Alasdair Richardson (firstname.lastname@example.org), CC-ing the BAHS account (email@example.com).
If you would like to put yourself forward as a mentor and have not already done so, please get in touch as soon as possible (and certainly before the deadline for applications).
We very much hope that this scheme will contribute to the success of our community as well as the welfare of its members. With this in mind, we are looking forward to hearing from any of you that may benefit from this additional support network.
With very best wishes,
Jo and Alasdair, on behalf of the BAHS board.
